The Alpha-Sigma Chapter Scholarship Program is administered by the Alpha-Sigma of Kappa Sigma Educational Foundation. The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) educational foundation and is supported by the donations it receives from alumni, parents, and friends of the Chapter, together with the investment income from several endowments. The actual number of scholarships, and the amount of each, may vary from year to year depending on the amount of donations received by the Foundation and the investment return earned on the endowed funds. If you are an incoming Freshman or Alpha-Sigma undergraduate member and interested in applying for one of the scholarships below, know that you will be evaluated based on your grades, campus & chapter involvement, service, and how you answer the questions. Additionally, Kappa Sigma members will be evaluated based on their ritual levels. Please fill out this application.
PILLAR SCHOLARSHIPS
Dick Greer Pillar Scholarship — Named in honor of Dick Greer '51, whose generous contribution to the Kappa Sigma house capital campaign was instrumental in establishing the Alpha-Sigma endowment fund, this $4,000 annual scholarship is awarded to a member who exemplifies the Four Pillars of Kappa Sigma: Fellowship, Leadership, Scholarship, and Service.
Rick Postle Pillar Scholarship — Named in honor of Rick Postle '67 in recognition of his generous support of the Kappa Sigma house capital campaign and the Alpha-Sigma endowment fund, this $4,000 annual scholarship is awarded to a member who exemplifies the Four Pillars of Kappa Sigma: Fellowship, Leadership, Scholarship, and Service.
Clair Tosino Pillar Scholarship — Named in honor of Clair Tosino '79, who served Alpha-Sigma as Grand Scribe, Pledge Educator, and Pledge Class President before going on to a distinguished career in healthcare administration and later serving on the House Company Board of Directors, this $4,000 annual scholarship is awarded to a member who exemplifies the Four Pillars of Kappa Sigma: Fellowship, Leadership, Scholarship, and Service.
Ron Harris Pillar Scholarship — Named in honor of Ron Harris '57, who served Alpha-Sigma as Grand Scribe and Grand Master and went on to a distinguished career as a chemical engineer and food industry executive before returning to OSU as an Adjunct Professor in Food Science and Technology, this $4,000 annual scholarship is awarded to a member who exemplifies the Four Pillars of Kappa Sigma: Fellowship, Leadership, Scholarship, and Service.
LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIPS
Bob Lowrie Leadership Scholarship — Named in honor of Bob Lowrie '65, who served Alpha-Sigma as Grand Treasurer before answering his country's call to serve in the United States Army, including a tour of duty in Vietnam for which he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. He has also devoted himself to civic leadership as a founder and past president of Indiana Bulls Baseball and past president of Community Hospitals Foundation of Indianapolis. This $2,500 annual scholarship is awarded to a member who has demonstrated outstanding leadership within the chapter or on campus.
Steve Simon Leadership Scholarship — Named in honor of Steve Simon '80 in recognition of his generous support of the Kappa Sigma house capital campaign and the Alpha-Sigma endowment fund, this $2,500 annual scholarship is awarded to a member who has demonstrated outstanding leadership within the chapter or on campus.
Louis Ludlum Leadership Scholarship — Named in honor of Louis Ludlum '75, whose heartfelt connection to Alpha-Sigma and its lifelong brotherhood left a lasting mark on all who knew him, this $2,500 annual scholarship is awarded to a member who has demonstrated outstanding leadership within the chapter or on campus.
Donald James Leadership Scholarship — Named in honor of Donald James '68, who credited Kappa Sigma with giving him lifelong friends and a lasting sense of brotherhood, this $2,500 annual scholarship is awarded to a member who has demonstrated outstanding leadership within the chapter or on campus.
FISCHER BUSINESS SCHOLARSHIP
Sam Swope Scholarship — Named in honor of Sam Swope '44, whose children established an endowed gift through the Sam Swope Family Foundation fulfilling his wish to give back to the Alpha-Sigma chapter, this $3,000 annual scholarship (awarded as three separate scholarships) supports members pursuing excellence in business and academic achievement. Recipients are selected based on academic performance and their commitment to the ideals of Kappa Sigma.
COMMUNITY SERVICE SCHOLARSHIPS
Philip Turner Community Service Scholarship — Named in honor of Philip Turner '80, who served as Chapter Treasurer and graduated summa cum laude with a BS in Chemistry before co-founding IntegraLink in 1997 and enjoying a 40-year career in software technology, and who has devoted more than three decades of service to the Alpha-Sigma House Company — including ten years as Treasurer and serving as its President since 2015 — this $2,000 annual scholarship is awarded to a member who has demonstrated outstanding dedication to community service and public engagement.
Rick Dishnica Community Service Scholarship — Named in honor of Rick Dishnica '66, a dedicated supporter of Alpha-Sigma whose commitment to the brotherhood extended beyond his undergraduate years, this $2,000 annual scholarship is awarded to a member who has demonstrated outstanding dedication to community service and public engagement.
James Nyland Community Service Scholarship — Named in honor of Jim Nyland '63 in recognition of his generous support of the Kappa Sigma house capital campaign and the Alpha-Sigma endowment fund, this $2,000 annual scholarship is awarded to a member who has demonstrated outstanding dedication to community service and public engagement.
Brad Longstreth Community Service Scholarship — Named in honor of Brad Longstreth '87, who served Alpha-Sigma as Grand Master, Grand Master of Ceremonies, and Philanthropy Chair before earning his MBA and building a successful career in sales leadership, and who continues to serve the chapter as Treasurer of the House Company, this $2,000 annual scholarship is awarded to a member who has demonstrated outstanding dedication to community service and public engagement.
ATHLETICS SCHOLARSHIP
Dave Foley Athletics Scholarship — Named in honor of Dave Foley '68, who reflected that his Kappa Sigma experience was a profound and formative part of his life, this $2,000 annual scholarship is awarded to a member who has excelled in athletic achievement while maintaining the standards of scholarship and brotherhood expected of a Kappa Sigma man. Brother Foley was a three-year starter and co-captain of the 1968 National Champion Ohio State Buckeyes, earned consensus All-American honors that same year, and went on to a distinguished NFL career with the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills that included a Pro Bowl selection in 1973 — all while earning three-year Academic All-American recognition.
MERIT RECOGNITION SCHOLARSHIPS
Noel Klay Merit Scholarship — Named in honor of Noel Klay '95 in recognition of his generous contribution to the Kappa Sigma house capital campaign and the Alpha-Sigma endowment fund, this $2,000 annual scholarship is awarded to a member who has achieved high academic distinction while demonstrating commitment to the ideals of Kappa Sigma.
Dan Ludwin Merit Scholarship — Named in honor of Dan Ludwin '89 in recognition of his generous support of the Kappa Sigma house capital campaign and the Alpha-Sigma endowment fund, this $2,000 annual scholarship is awarded to a member who has achieved high academic distinction while demonstrating commitment to the ideals of Kappa Sigma.
John Hart Merit Scholarship — Named in honor of John Hart '81, whose generosity played an important role in the Kappa Sigma house capital campaign and the establishment of the Alpha-Sigma endowment fund, this $2,000 annual scholarship is awarded to a member who has achieved high academic distinction while demonstrating commitment to the ideals of Kappa Sigma.
Hileman Legacy Merit Scholarship — Named in honor of John Hileman '78 and the Hileman family legacy of Kappa Sigma service — a tradition spanning his grandfather and three sons, several of whom were Alpha Sigma brothers — this $2,000 annual scholarship is awarded to a member who exemplifies the family's enduring values of service and charity within the brotherhood.
Walter Shuler Merit Scholarship — Named in honor of Walt Shuler '75, a founding officer and President of the Alpha-Sigma of Kappa Sigma Education Foundation and a three-time Assistant Alumni Advisor who was part of the team that rechartered Alpha-Sigma in 2004, this $2,000 annual scholarship is awarded to a member who has achieved high academic distinction while demonstrating commitment to the ideals of Kappa Sigma.
William J. Giacci Merit Scholarship — Named in honor of William J. Giacci '75, who founded the Alpha-Sigma of Kappa Sigma Education Foundation in 2015 and served as its first president for three years, and whose entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish Classic Metal Works in Sylvania, Ohio while also serving his community as president of Heritage Sylvania and overseeing Lathrop House, a national Underground Railroad landmark, this $2,000 annual scholarship is awarded to a member who has achieved high academic distinction while demonstrating commitment to the ideals of Kappa Sigma.
Norman Tschantz Merit Scholarship — Named in honor of Norman Tschantz, whose passion for business and economics inspired a lasting commitment to Alpha-Sigma reflected in the Norman J. Tschantz Trust established in 2006, this $1,400 annual scholarship is awarded to a member who has achieved high academic distinction while demonstrating commitment to the ideals of Kappa Sigma.
FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIPS
Jason Juarez Leadership Scholarship — Named in honor of Jason Juarez, a dentist and Alpha-Sigma alumnus who described Kappa Sigma as a profound light in his life, this $2,000 annual scholarship is awarded to a freshman member who has demonstrated early promise in academics, leadership, and a commitment to brotherhood.
Dave Mader Leadership Scholarship — Named in honor of Dave Mader '65, who served as Alpha-Sigma's Grand Procurator, went on to a distinguished 30-year career at Owens-Corning including roles in sales, marketing, and regional general management, and has remained a tireless contributor to the chapter through financial support, Project Rebound work sessions, and co-facilitating the focus group that helped guide Alpha-Sigma's rechartering efforts, this $2,000 annual scholarship is awarded to a freshman member who has demonstrated early promise in academics, leadership, and a commitment to brotherhood.
Rich Anderson Leadership Scholarship — Named in honor of Rich Anderson in recognition of his generous support of the Kappa Sigma house capital campaign and the Alpha-Sigma endowment fund, this $2,000 annual scholarship is awarded to a freshman member who has demonstrated early promise in academics, leadership, and a commitment to brotherhood.
Robert Weltlich Leadership Scholarship — Named in honor of Robert Weltlich '63, a two-term Grand Master of Alpha-Sigma who has long served as an informal representative of the brotherhood of the 1960s, this $2,000 annual scholarship is awarded to an initiated member — with preference given to a current or former Grand Master — who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and commitment to the chapter.
All scholarships are awarded to men who have been initiated into or have pledged the Alpha-Sigma Chapter of Kappa Sigma at The Ohio State University, or who are strong member-prospects of the chapter. The Alpha-Sigma Chapter of Kappa Sigma Education Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization.
