Gordon Shuler's lifelong commitment to the Alpha-Sigma Chapter of Kappa Sigma reflects a legacy of professional excellence, steadfast service, and enduring loyalty to the Brotherhood. His induction into the Kappa Sigma Hall of Honor recognizes not only his distinguished legal career but also the countless ways he invested his time, knowledge, and leadership in support of generations of Alpha-Sigma brothers.
Brother Shuler pledged Alpha-Sigma chapter in 1966 and was then initiated in January of 1967 along with a large pledge class of 12 – 13 new members. In Spring ’67, Gordon was elected to serve the chapter as its Grand Procurator. He attended Grand Conclave in the summer of ’67, an event held in Atlanta, Georgia. He also was house manager for one summer. Gordon was active in the chapter, participating on the Greek/IFC championship football team. He also worked with fellow Kappa Sigma members at the Varsity Club, developing friendships and a spirit of teamwork that would continue throughout his life.
Within a year of graduating from The Ohio State University, Brother Shuler would be accepted into the University of Michigan’s Law School. He earned his Juris Doctor degree in 1972 and shortly thereafter, moved back to Columbus, Ohio. Gordon soon established a career primarily as a civil litigation attorney and would soon serve four years in the City Attorney's Office during the administration of future Mayor, brother Greg Lashutka. He later became a co-founder of the law firm of Shuler, Plank, Morgan and Brahm, where he built a reputation for exceptional legal knowledge, integrity, and professional judgment. After 50 years of practice, Gordon retired from the legal profession.
Gordon’s commitment to Alpha-Sigma extended well beyond his professional accomplishments. As a volunteer alumni advisor during 2005 and 2006, Brother Shuler provided guidance and counsel to the undergraduate chapter while remaining deeply involved in preserving its history and traditions. He researched and authored an account documenting the Neil family's connection to the chapter's historic home at 1842 Indianola Avenue which contributed valuable historical insight for future generations. He also participated in numerous renovation, clean-up, and refurbishment projects at the chapter house.
Throughout his legal career, Brother Shuler generously shared his experience with younger members who expressed an interest in the legal profession, offering mentorship, career guidance, and pro bono legal assistance whenever the chapter faced difficult circumstances. His willingness to serve as both advisor and advocate exemplified the ideals of lifelong brotherhood. His influence within the chapter also extended through family, as he encouraged his younger brother, Walt, to pledge and become a member of Alpha-Sigma in 1975.
Brother Shuler earned admission to practice before the United States District Courts for both the Southern and Northern Districts of Ohio, as well as the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, as well as the United States Supreme Court. He was further recognized with the prestigious AV Preeminent® designation, reflecting the highest standards of legal ability, ethics, and professional excellence among his peers. Gordon also served as a member of the Board of Governors of the Columbus Bar Association.
Gordon has been married to his wife, Kathy, for 48 years as of 2026. He has three adult daughters who all live and work in the Central Ohio area.
Gordon P. Shuler's induction into the Kappa Sigma Hall of Honor celebrates a lifetime of distinguished service to his profession, unwavering dedication to Alpha-Sigma, and a commitment to mentoring and supporting his fellow Brothers.
